The Senior Specialist, Workplace Innovation for SHRMLabs, SHRM’s workplace innovation laboratory and venture capital arm, manages and implements a broad portfolio of research and development programs to meet SHRM's organizational needs. The Sr. Specialist provides senior-level guidance on possible investment and/or incubation of startup companies by leading or performing analysis of trends in the workplace and HR technology. The Sr. Specialist also makes recommendations for new products or services that elevate the practice of HR through the use of technology and may manage product development projects as necessary.

SHRMLabs functions as a think tank within SHRM’s Knowledge Division, staffed by research and product analysts whose principal mission is defining how automation, artificial intelligence, collaboration, decision making, and sustainability will define the future of work in the next 10-20 years.

Your Day:

  • Program Management

  • Implements and manages various programs that engage and provide relationship support for SHRM’s portfolio of startup companies, helping them punch above their weight with introductions and meetings.

  • Supports regular review of pipeline/ innovation portfolio programs.

  • Assists startups execute against their innovation strategies.

  • Manages a broad portfolio of service initiatives for startup companies in the workplace tech space, including company on-boarding, SHRM’s portfolio community and vendor platforms, and portfolio-focused events and content distribution.

  • Vets, implements, and manages partnership development programs.

  • Coordinates the operation of departments to confirm that assigned programs are completed according to specifications, budgets, and timelines.

  • Takes proactive steps to minimize delays in delivery.

  • Communicates with stakeholders as needed to arrange meetings, confirm program schedules, and discuss any program problems.

  • Ensures that stakeholders clients are regularly informed of the status of the program.

  • Regularly communicates with management regarding program status and any problems or potential problems.

  • Forecasts potential schedule delays and develops alternate plans.

  • Engagement

  • Leverages the organization’s staff, members, and network to provide support for SHRMLabs by featuring topic experts and providing a layer of diligence to fuel growth and success.

  • Forges relationships with internal stakeholders and potential partners.

  • Collaborates with other SHRM divisions to align the Workplace Innovation Lab communications with organizational strategy.

  • Crafts commercial-quality communications for use with senior-level and executive leadership.

  • Creates and facilitates presentations on HR and innovation in the workplace.

  • Serves as a thought leader to represent SHRM at conferences and events.

  • Develops stories and visual elements to conceptualize and communicate ideas to stakeholders and potential customers.

  • Designs and facilitate challenge workshops, when applicable.

  • Executes branding and engagement activities at SHRM and external events.

  • Research & Analysis

  • Conducts research on key themes/topics related to the future of work, workplace technology, HR technology, etc.

  • Actively researches prevailing and emerging markets and explores key trends and opportunities in collaboration with the Managing Director to holistically understand the competitive landscape.

  • Grounded in research, formulates hypotheses, and articulates strategies for new businesses/products we can create and/or markets we can enter, builds business cases and creates pro forma models.

  • Writes, edits, and presents SHRM workplace innovation thought leadership content including publications, webcasts, and presentations.

  • Devises clear development plans that propel solutions through experimentation, testing and refinement based on learnings.

  • Synthesizes workplace trend research and distills it for internal and external audiences.

  • Oversees the design, development, implementation, and analysis of surveys.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience/training

  • Five to ten years of relevant work experience in management/strategic consulting or social impact organization.

  • Strong analytical skills and strong inclination towards rigor with demonstrated ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative evidence.

  • Strong ability to relate data analysis to bottom line business results is a must.

  • Experience moderating in-depth interviews and focus groups.

  • Experience conducting qualitative and quantitative research.

  • Experience with Excel and financial models or financial analysis.

  • Naturally inquisitive with a voracious appetite for learning and a boundless intellectual capacity for solving complicated problems.

  • Knowledge of innovation strategy and technologies.

  • Excellent oral communication, writing, and presentation skills.

  • Strong foundation in applied research design, test construction and validation.

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and leadership skills.

  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment

Let Us Know If You Have:

  • Master’s degree in technology, finance, or related field

  • Familiarity with workplace technologies.

  • 1-2 years of venture capital, investment banking, private equity and/or M&A experience.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit, and/or startup or accelerator experience.

  • CFA certification.

  • Work or living experience abroad

  • Fluency in 2 or more languages.

  • Digital leadership experience in a multinational global company.

  • Familiarity with Salesforce and Tableau.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.

  • Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing, and typing. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

  • Light lifting is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force to constantly move objects.

Work Environment

  • Work is regularly performed in a combination of office and conference settings and routinely uses standard office equipment.

  • Travel Required: Moderate 20-30%
