SHRM Senior Specialist, Public Relations in Alexandria, Virginia
The Communication Department is responsible for informing all of SHRM’s audiences on SHRM’s thought leadership, mission and activities in a positive, consistent and credible manner. It is also responsible for publicly protecting and defending SHRM’s reputation and brand. Typically, this means working directly with news organizations and journalists responsible for producing the news and features in mass media and utilizing social media to exchange information about SHRM directly with the press, key audiences and influencers. It encompasses Brand, Media Relations, Social Media Engagement and Corporate Communications. The collective team engages in a variety of work related to managing SHRM’s reputation and brand image among SHRM’s members as well as elevating the reputation to business leaders and policy makers on a broader, global scale.

Under the direction of the Director of Corporate Communications, the Senior Specialist, Public Relations tells the stories of SHRM as the voice of all things related to work and crafts narratives to elevate the global HR profession; manages SHRM’s content strategy and implementation, which includes earned, owned, and digital media; and provides support across SHRM departments and affiliate brands. This role champions multiple pieces of integrated communication campaigns. The position plays an integral role in supporting achievement of team goals that ladder into the goals and business objectives of the SHRM brand and plays a key role in setting and implementing public relations strategy and campaigns.
Manage cohesive brand alignment in all deliverables, with specific focus on developing and project managing organization-wide PR campaigns, content and graphics collateral for marketing and support messaging for the SHRM brand.
Develop PR campaigns and messaging for SHRM affiliates.
Direct external copywriters as appropriate to uphold the SHRM brand and conveyance of appropriate tone, purpose, & voice.
Recommend specific medias that would convey/deliver the message/offer to members and prospective members in the most efficient and effective manner.
Support development and execution of annual campaigns and marketing collateral for the Certification team.
Support development of marketing collateral for the Conference Marketing team
Support development of social media campaigns and departmental editorial calendar for the Social Media team.
In coordination with marketing managers/program managers, develop messages for trade shows and conferences including value proposition to support marketing campaign, booth messaging strategy and presentation, and graphic development.
Integrate the SHRM communications strategy across product marketing and acquisition and retention programs in coordination with marketing managers.
Provide liaison with both internal and external partners, such as Market Research, External Affairs, Design & Production, Online Editorial, Global Business Solutions, SHRM's affiliates, and SHRM's agency partners:
Creative project management of programs/initiatives/campaigns.
Other writing assignments to support SHRM events and master brand.
Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, English, Communications, Journalism, Marketing or a related field.
Project management and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
Analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong written and oral communication skills, including excellent writing, grammar and proofreading and editing skills.
Ability to prioritize, plan and execute responsibilities independently.
Ability to multitask and reprioritize throughout the day.
Ability to be hands-on and highly responsive in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to manage a diverse workload in a demanding and dynamic workplace.
Ability to be comfortable providing clear, concise reporting to stakeholders and executive management.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with all levels of staff and members.
Collaborative and team-player skills.
Working knowledge of AP Style and journalistic principles.
6 years of relevant experience, including:
Managing cohesive brand alignment in all deliverables, with specific focus on developing organization-wide PR campaigns.
Being proactive in pitching and engaging members of the media.
Writing, editing and content creation.
Working with the mass media.
