The Manager, Virtual Event Innovation is responsible for leading SHRM’s virtual event strategy and overseeing implementation for current and future events, including our Annual Conference & Expo, specialty conferences, and other hybrid meetings and events reaching between 100 – 25,000 people annually. The manager understands the virtual event and conference industry, including programming for online learning, user web behaviors and digital production. Digitally savvy and curious on latest technology trends, this position is continually up to date on virtual event best practices, has an audience-centric approach, and provides innovative thinking to drive new ideas in an everchanging environment.

Your Day:

  • Provides leadership as a critical team member, working cross-functionally with colleagues on event/conference strategy, concepting, event operations, sponsorship activation, audience development, and execution of a growing portfolio of virtual and hybrid events, combining in-person and digital attendance options.

  • Leads requests for proposals, selection process and contract management of virtual event platform(s) and/or conference mobile applications for each event product, working with IT, Accounting, Exhibits & Sponsorships, other internal departments and external agencies.

  • With deep understanding of technology, manages all technical aspects of virtual events, including written briefs, direction of programming for hybrid and virtual events, integration with other SHRM platforms, and management of conference app.

  • Showcases deep knowledge of online experiences for virtual conference learning and stays up to date on industry best practices and how these can be translated into SHRM’s offerings to elevate virtual attendee experience.

  • Has keen understanding and experience in building online communities and virtual networking for events.

  • Ensures that virtual event experience aligns to overarching event strategies and SHRM’s organizational business goals and messaging.

  • Builds and manages relationships with in-house and external partners.

  • Partners with external agency to oversee project management and timelines of each event product.

  • Develops and manages budget and reporting on metrics of success.

  • Partners with event operations and event programming partner leads to facilitate all related meetings and communications.

  • Contributes to preparation of marketing and communications materials, monitoring all virtual programming elements to feature throughout planning, execution, and post event cycles.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned to support SHRM events.

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Event Management, Broadcast Journalism, or equivalent relevant work experience/training.

  • At least eight (8) years of experience in a similar work environment, preferably with medium to large brand(s). In-house and agency experience preferred.

  • Experience producing revenue-generating virtual conferences and events.

  • Portfolio of progressive virtual event experience and experience producing virtual events in a variety of online platforms.

  • Deep understanding of TV or video programming and production preferred.

  • Background in online learning to include content development, programming and virtual best practices.

  • Project management skills; attention to detail, organization, prioritization, and analytic skills with a proven ability to multi-task and manage complexity.

  • Creative, strategic thinker.

  • Ability to forge strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Self-starter attitude, entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to move quickly in a fast-paced environment.

  • Persuasive communications skills with ability to appropriately and positively represent SHRM to external constituents.

  • Presentation skills with ability to take concepts and/or ideas and easily translate into written or spoken narratives.

  • Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to work and lead in a collaborative environment coupled with curiosity and openness.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.

  • Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing and typing. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

  • Light lifting is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force to constantly move objects.

Work Environment

  • Work is regularly performed in a combination of office and conference settings and routinely uses standard office equipment.

  • This job requires occasional travel 0-10%.
